It’s Not Bad Taxidermy. It’s a Lovable Form of Art.
Over the last few years, you may have seen Stoned Fox in any of the thousands of funny memes that lit the internet. But if you think this glazed-eye creature is the humorous result of taxidermy gone wrong, you’re sadly mistaken. This “bad taxidermy” is the work of Welsh artist Adele Morse who holds a Master’s degree from the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London.
You see, Ms. Morse, now residing in Dalston, East London, developed a fondness for taxidermy back in 2005. Back then, it was just a hobby. It wasn’t until 2012 while studying at the Royal Academy that Stoned Fox (who died of natural causes) came to be. Though she usually practiced traditional taxidermy, she wanted to do something different, something with character and more human-like – like Stoned Fox.
She placed the finished critter on eBay with a starting bid of around $15 U.S. dollars. A bidding war ensued, and at the same time, the little Red Fox with the quirky smile went insanely viral in Russia, coined the name, “Stoned Fox”
As a Russian fan explained, “He looks a bit sad and drunk and that’s how Russians feel.”
Well, that really pissed off the Communist government who went one to practically accuse Morse of being a spy.
To make a fascinating but long story short, Morse made “bad-taxidermy” her full-time gig. Her creativity with stuffed animals is being commissioned by buyers from around the world and bringing more admiral laughs from people like us across the internet.
Oh, and the winning bid on eBay? About $400 U.S. dollars by Manchester music promoter, Mike Boorman.
